Sunday at the Movies with Janet Roach
Our new series of Sunday movies is starting up on January 26th.
Academy award winning screenwriter Janet Roach will be hosting her popular Sundays @ the movies series again at the Lyme Library. This series will be focused on stunning international and American films. Not to be missed this series is a visual gift to the community
Refreshments will be served free of charge (but…donations are always welcome ;-))
The schedule is:
1/26/2025 @ 1:00pm- “Shower” -(1999 Taiwan) A young businessman returns to his Chinese village to visit his estranged father and the intellectually challenged he has long denied in the bath house that is the entire world for father and son. Humane, heartfelt and closely observed.
2/9/2025 @ 1:00pm- “Rabbit Proof Fence”– ( 2002 Australia) Three Aboriginal girls, torn from their mothers’ arms, escape from the training school where they are being taught to be servants in wealthy white households. Alone, they must find their way home across 1500 miles of Outback terrain. Based on a true story.
2/23/2025 @ 1:00pm-“Fitzcaraldo” (1982) Directed by Werner Herzog. Fitzcarldo is the story of an opera-loving Irish immigrant, named Brian Sweeny Fitzgerald (played by Klaus Kinski) who attempts to build an opera house in Iquitos, Peru during the rubber boom of the early part of the 20th century. An over-the-top adventure story fueled by obsession and art.
3/9/2025 @ 1:00pm-“The Playboys”. (2002 Ireland) An unwed mother defies her rural community by refusing to reveal the identity of the father of her child. When a troupe of roving theatrical players rolls into town, the possibility of escape rears its lovely head. Will she or won’t she?
3/23/2025 @ 1:00pm-“House of Sand and Fog” (2002 United States). Directed by Vadim Perelman. Recently becoming homeless due to a misunderstanding, Kathy Nicolo (played by Jennifer Connely) becomes locked in a life and death battle for repossession of her former home. House of Sand and Fog is much more than just a story of real estate gone wrong but confronts racist and xenophobic views in modern culture.
4/6/2025 @ 1:00pm-“Mrs. Henderson Presents” (2005) United Kingdom. Directed by Stephen Frears. A biographical musical comedy-drama starring Dame Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. Mrs. Henderson Presents follows the adventures of recently widowed Mrs. Laura Henderson who attempts to (with the help of impresario Vivian Van Damn, played by Bob Hoskins) create a revue theatre along the lines of the Folies Bergere in war-torn London during World War II.
